When did this happen? Why is there so much angst against those who help us teach our children? True teachers, are those who demonstrate passion for working with our kids. People who wake up in the morning, not awaiting a huge payday, but providing that spark that will help a child along with their lives. As an educator for 22 years, I have witnessed multiple programs, ideas, educational programs, but never have I felt the angst and divide right now towards our educational system. I see multiple posts on social media regarding the new PARCC tests and the Common Core. I just would like everyone to sit back and conduct a little exercise. Here is a question that I have asked my teachers in our professional development sessions. “Who was your favorite teacher and why?”
Now when you think of that person, how many of you use words like “caring” or “listened to me”? I know that most of you will think of a great story, of your favorite lesson and an awesome hands on project that taught you to see things in a different light. This is what a teacher does folks. I think we need to rethink the way we look at our heroes, and bring back the positive feelings towards education for the sake of our children.
